Frank Ruvoli Interview
Recently I was able to sit down and have a great conversation and coffee with Frank Ruvoli. Frank is a
self-titled singer and songwriter. I was able to learn about how he became a singer/songwriter, and I was very intrigued by his story. Here are some questions I got to ask Frank and his answers.
Diane: What style/genre of music do you consider yourself?
Frank: Alternative pop rock
D: Who are your musical influences?
F: Dave Matthews, Beatles, Tom Petty, Neil Young
D: When did you start singing and playing the guitar?
F: I always liked music and always kind of sang. In 5th grade I would sing to all the girls at school and in choir. I started playing guitar in college learning off of YouTube and took some voice lessons in college before putting myself out there.
D: What is the story behind your latest single? (“If Looks Could Kill”)
F: It is a reflection of past relationships and experiences, along with bad break ups that some of my friends and I had.
D: What moves you to write a song?
F: Anything – I write two different ways. I’ll come up with a cool sound on the guitar and then go from there and write a song to that. The other way is anything I deal with or straight up emotions that are personal, or I’ll write songs of other people too based off stories I hear. Sometimes if it’s a friend going through an experience I’ve been through, I’ll combine the two experiences and write a song about it.
D: What’s the worst show you’ve ever played?
F: When I first started, there were times I only played to the bartenders because no one was there. That hasn’t happened in a very long time.
D: What’s the best show you’ve ever played?
F: There’s been a few. Playing festivals and some of the college shows I’ve done in the past have been fun. Most notable would be getting hired to play the halftime show and DePaul vs. UIC at UIC and we were on TV. It was pretty great!
D: What is something you want people to take away from your music?
F: As a musician – it’s possible to be an artist because when I first started everyone told me it was a waste of time, so I did the opposite to prove that you could make a living from music. When you’re an artist, you still have the freedom to do other things. It takes time and work, but you can still do what you want to do. In my songs I want people to feel good. I write a lot of my music so people feel the music and the song and can relate to it. Some of the deeper ones can be relatable and if someone relates, it’s cool no matter what it is.
D: How did the song Butterfly come to you?
F: I wrote Butterfly in college. I would sit in the stairwell as I practiced. One time when I was practicing, I saw a butterfly and sang to the butterfly and the song just kind of happened. I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go in with my life because I knew I didn’t want to be a lawyer anymore and I wasn’t sure what to do with my life. It was kind of fitting. I really enjoyed the opportunity to sit down with Frank and get to know him on a deeper level. He is such a nice person and does so much for people around him.
