Halestorm Reigns Heavily in Kansas City

It was a cool evening in Kansas City, on Monday night, and with the summer coming to an end, we are almost out of tornado season. Though the storms have been fairly mild this year, we had one more to weather: Halestorm. Though they had just played at Rockfest earlier this year, the rockers had no problem packing the house on Monday night.

Splitting their show between two sets, Halestorm showcased their talents on both acoustic, and electric instruments, bringing down the house during both. After taking the stage, Lzzy addressed the crowd, letting them know what they were in for that evening, “We’re going to be playing some songs that you never heard before. We’re going to be playing some songs that we only played once, or twice, before.  And we’re also going to be doing a lot of stuff off the new album. Some stuff we’ve been playing for years. Some old school songs. But most of all, we’re just going to have a good time, OK?”

Things opened with Beautiful with You, off of their The Strange Case of… album, Lizzy was already showing the strength of her vocals, and her range this early in the show, and living up to the promise of playing things they haven’t done much. The envelope was pushed even further when, during the acoustic set, Halestorm rocked old school style with Janice Joplin’s Piece of my HeartLzzy’s raspy vocals lent themselves well to the classic tune. The acoustic set would be rounded out with Mz. Hyde and Freak Like Me.

After a short break, Halestorm returned to the stage to “plug in” and rock out for “the greatest rock city in the world” (as Lzzy describe Kansas City), and proceeded to melt faces with hits like Scream, Amen, I Like it Heavy, and  Love Bites (So Do I).

Having toured heavily since 2006, Halestorm has a lot of road experience under their belts, and command the stage like the seasoned professionals they are. Moreover, they headlined the show, sponsored by Jagermeister, without having any support acts on the bill. Something that few in attendance seemed to mind, and it gave us that much more time to rock out with The ‘Storm.
